Glimpses and Glances of Japanese Architecture

I was fortunate enough to have travelled back to Japan in 2011. In my meanderings and wanderings about and around Tokyo and vicinity, I was rewarded with a wide variety and seemingly disparate forms of Japanese architecture, thus the contrasting images below. From traditional minka to modern apartment complexes, hotels to residences – modern and otherwise…

Mainebiz Book

In the fall of 2012 I was pleased and honored to have my photography selected for inclusion in the Mainebiz book, Maine: A photo portrait of the pine tree state.

A collection of photographs and company profiles, the book is intended for corporate gifting and recruitment, but is also available for retail sale. As the Publisher’s summary explains, “Our photo editors have looked through more than 6,000 images to bring you the best of what we have to offer. The pictures within these pages were not only created in Maine, but exclusively by Maine photographers. Moreover, Maine: A photo portrait of the pine tree state features not only beautiful photography, but the compelling stories of 20 companies that call Maine home.”

Rockland, Maine Twilight in January

Something about the frigid temperatures, snow, and the early twilight of January that I find ever so inspiring. Downtown Rockland, Maine has so much to offer all through the year and here are a few images of the Strand Theater, Atlantic Baking Company, Fog Bar & Cafe, Farnsworth Art Museum, and the Dowling Walsh Gallery as they were in the gloaming of the first weekend of 2013.

Stay tuned for more images of downtown Rockland this winter…

On Cargill Pond

The last photo shoot of 2012 was on Cargill Pond in Liberty, Maine. With a fresh snowfall, I knew the time was ripe to capture this house. For this shot I went with the Canon 17mm Tilt Shift lens. I wanted to convey the warmth of the interior and so I needed the contrast of the snow in the foreground.  I also wanted to have the overhanging windblown branch in the frame, as well as the top of the tall, aged tree towering over the gable end of the home. The tilt shift lens allowed me to meet all of the compositional demands and to capture the image I had had in my mind since I visited the camp over a year ago. This shot was taken on December 30, 2012, and for me this was a great way to end a fabulous year. Looking forward to 2013!
