Gigi Aea
Artist Gigi Aea, Haute Couture textile designer for Gigi Aea Studios is a fourth generation artist from the Republic of Georgia. Emigrating to New York in 1990s he distinguished himself in the fashion world of Haute Couture creating hand-painted designs for Mary McFadden, Oscar de la Renta, and Alexander McQueen. His designs have won numerous awards, and have been published in prestigious journals and publications.
His latest project involves large scale paintings on silk, rendered at 60″ x 60″, for reproduction on fabric for upholstery and fashion applications. These hand-painted silks become magnificent worlds in and of themselves, conveying a story in rare and uncommon ways, juxtaposing colors, and creating a dazzling array of layers and hues.
Challenging to reproduce, Gigi sought out the services of Dave Clough Photography to capture digital images of his silk canvases to be printed on fabric in Italy. Exacting detail, tone-specific color correction, and tack-sharp images are a prerequisite. The end product of his process are rolls of fabric on which the pattern repeats every five feet instead of the standard 18 inches.
His work is stunningly gorgeous, and provides both interior and fashion designers with entirely new levels of options. Custom designs to match any creative idea are available as well. Imagine the possibilities!

Rockland Developments
Mainebiz recently featured my photography in a cover story on all of the development in Rockland, Maine entitled, “Rock-Solid Resurgence”. They were spot on in their assessment.
The Center for Maine Contemporary Art (CMCA) is moving to Rockland and their Toshiko Mori designed building will open in the summer of 2016, seen below is the Executive Director, Suzette McAvoy. While CMCA’s new home is being built, they have taken up interim quarters on Rockland’s waterfront and continue to exhibit compelling and creative works of art. Luxury boatbuilder Lyman-Morse of Thomaston is establishing a land-based presence in Rockland with the construction of a five story boutique hotel at the head of Main Street – pictured below in the gallery is owner, Cabot Lyman atop the new hotel. The Farnsworth Art Museum received funding for an extensive facelift to the Wyeth Center and the building was surrounded by scaffolding a good deal of the summer season – the project is now complete and looks stunning. The Dowling Walsh Gallery on Main Street is also in the news with plans for a multi-million dollar expansion. Not pictured here is the new and very much welcomed Main Street Markets.
A rock-solid resurgence for sure.

Artist Morris David Dorenfeld
Morris David Dorenfeld is a textile and tapestry artist. Earlier this year I photographed three of his Hunter Variation tapestries here in the studio. In our discussions during the shoot, I knew that his living/work space must be as creative, interesting and visually pleasing as his art is. I made plans to photograph his home and when I arrived at the coastal property some weeks later, my hunch was proven correct many times over.
A modest 24×24 post and beam structure originally built as a garage, the property is a work of art itself. The interior displays a life dedicated to his art with his loom and living space co-mingling in one room. With beautiful grounds and a garden tended to for over 35 years, it is a special place….expansive gardens hugging the home with dogwoods, weeping spruce trees and an extraordinary climbing hydrangea towering over all on the ocean’s edge.
He is represented by the Caldbeck Gallery in Rockland and will have a solo exhibition there in October 2015.

Ken Greenleaf, Artist
As an admirer of his art, I was pleased when artist Ken Greenleaf asked me to photograph his compelling recent work. His solo exhibition is at Berry Campbell in NYC on West 24th. Artist, sculptor, and art critic, Greenleaf is “an artist whose work is embedded in a philosophical and theoretical framework; he is a committed modernist, working in the minimalist tradition.” The show runs through January 3rd.

Dozier Bell, Artist
Dozier Bell is a Maine artist based in the Midcoast area. Her exquisite work has been described as atmospheric and dreamy, to this I would add richly wonderful. We spent a day together in her studio photographing her recent work for her show at Danese Corey on West 22nd in New York City. The exhibition runs until November 15th.

Boston Artist – Georgette Benisty
In October I was contacted by Boston-based artist Georgette Benisty to photograph her latest creations. Georgette is an amazing artist, and a warm and engaging individual originally from Casablanca. With an imagination which allows her to see beauty where it is not expected. She is inspired by her lifelong fascination with antique laces and Moroccan architecture.
As noted in her bio, “White lace is transformed into visions of the Artist’s history. These visions are enhanced by the shadows cast through the plexiglass adding another dimension and providing an additional layer of softness. Art lovers appreciate the painstaking detail; the three dimensionality, the paradox of rigid lines of modern plexiglass with the warm softness of lace. These pieces evoke an emotional connection to the artist and the history, culture and beauty of a land that is an integral part of her identity. The result is a truly unique and exquisite visual concept.”
