At Home in Cushing

Joe Russillo, architect and owner of Maple Street Design Studio in Camden, Maine and I first crossed paths years ago when I took a blueprint reading course he offered locally. I was thrilled when he asked me to photograph and document one of his projects for his portfolio of design work. Subsequently the home was featured in Maine Home + Design magazine’s  Architecture Issue in 2014.

Built (and built well by Vision Builders) at the crest of a long sloping hillside on the coast in Cushing, the house is right at home in its tranquil setting. Beautiful cabinetry, equally impressive stonework, and attention to detail throughout, the home is immediately welcoming with its flow from floor to floor – from the basement up to the rooftop tower with its commanding views.

I was delighted to return this winter to capture the house at twilight, and quickly realized that this home is photogenic in any season.

Red Baraat in Rockland

On Saturday, March 14th the Farnsworth Art Museum’s [Collective] 2015 Bash took place at the Wyeth Center in downtown Rockland and featured Red Baraat. The Brooklyn based, eight piece dohl and brass band blasted on stage propelled by Punjabi rooted bhangra beats, and fueled by an unending supply of energy and enthusiasm…and the packed house loved every moment of the show. Red Baraat lived up to the NPR dubbed title of “best party band in years,” and they did not disappoint. Not a slow tempo ballad in the bunch, this was a show not to be missed. A big thank you and round of applause to the Farnsworth [Collective] and all the volunteers that made this event happen!

Genest Concrete

Genest Concrete in Sanford, Maine was established in the 1930s, I was pleased to add the company to my client list in 2014. One of their many quality products are paving stones. These stones are installed in eye-catching and distinctive driveways, garden walkways, barbecue patios and poolside areas. Pictured here are images Genest Concrete used in their print advertising campaign from 6 locations in Maine and New Hampshire.

Images from the second home seen below are featured in the 2015 winter issue of Coastal Home.

Spaces & Places 2014

How do you squeeze one year into under six minutes? Hmmmm, let me try….

Spaces & Places highlights the best moments of a truly fabulous 2014. The year started with a Nobuyuki Tsujii concert at Carnegie Hall and ended with a Garland Jeffreys concert at Joe’s Pub. In between the NYC bookend concerts,  a terrific year which saw the release of Homes Down East, an expanding client base, and work, which in addition to architectural photography, included food, art, and concert photography as well. See for yourself and enjoy the Spaces and Places of 2014.

HD and full screen is recommended.

New Year’s Eve with Garland Jeffreys

What a great way to finish a truly wonderful year…seeing an all time favorite, Garland Jeffreys, in concert at Joe’s Pub in NYC. Exceeding high expectations, Mr. Jeffreys and his band delivered on all counts and left the crowd hungry for more. Bringing in tunes that spanned his career, he sang with passion and delivered the ever-relevant lyrics with heart and gusto. My night was complete upon hearing “Hail Hail Rock ‘n’ Roll” … a tune for the ages!

Ken Greenleaf, Artist

As an admirer of his art, I was pleased when artist Ken Greenleaf asked me to photograph his compelling recent work. His solo exhibition is at Berry Campbell in NYC on West 24th.  Artist, sculptor, and art critic,  Greenleaf  is “an artist whose work is embedded in a philosophical and theoretical framework; he is a committed modernist, working in the minimalist tradition.” The show runs through January 3rd.

I look forward to attending at the end of the year. Details on the show are here. Visit Ken’s website here.

Homes Down East – Classic Maine Coastal Cottages and Town Houses

After a year and a half in the making, Homes Down East, Classic Maine Coastal Cottages and Town Houses will be released in November!  The book is written by Earle Shettleworth, Chris Glass and Scott Hanson. The book features fifty-two homes in Maine that were featured in a magazine, Scientific American Building Monthly, over a hundred years ago. Along with artwork, photographs and floor plans that were originally published starting in the late 1800’s, Homes Down East also includes my contemporary photographs of thirty-two of the homes located throughout Maine. Architects represented include John Calvin Stevens, Fred Savage, Antoine Dorticos, George Burnham and Frederick A. Tompson.

Included in this post is a sample available for downloading.  I hope you find it both fascinating and enticing. Homes Down East is available on Amazon here.

Valliere Design Studio

Marcel Valliere at Valliere Design Studio in Thomaston has been busy designing and creating. I am pleased to present two of his recently completed projects…The exterior shots are of a home and barn on the coast of Maine, and the interior shots are of a different home also on the beautiful Maine coast.

It is always a great pleasure to work with Marcel and document the creativity being produced at Valliere Design Studio. For more of his work, please see  previous posts here and here.
